In Sea of Thieves, there are 10 distinct fish species, each with five unique variants: Base, Common, Uncommon, Night, and Rare. The Base variant is the most commonly encountered, while the Rare variant is the hardest to find. Night variants only appear at night but are as common as the Common variant. Each fish species requires specific conditions to be caught, including particular locations and bait. Fish Species Overview
Splashtails come in several variants: Ruby, Sunny, Indigo, Umber (rare), and Seafoam. They are typically found in open waters and cannot be caught in ponds. No bait is required to catch these fish.
Pondies include variants such as Charcoal, Orchid, Bronze, Bright (rare), and Moonsky. These fish are found exclusively in freshwater ponds. Like Splashtails, no bait is needed.
Islehoppers feature variants like Stone, Moss, Honey, Raven (rare), and Amethyst. They are located near large islands, with specific islands designated for each variant. No bait is necessary for catching these fish.
Ancientscales come in the variants Almond, Sapphire, Smoke, Bone (rare), and Starshine. They are found in the open waters of The Ancient Isles. To catch Ancientscales, leeches are required.
Plentifins include Olive, Amber, Cloudy, Bonedust (rare), and Watery variants. They are located in the open waters of The Shores of Plenty. Earthworms are needed to catch Plentifins.
Wildsplashes are available in Russet, Sandy, Ocean, Muddy, and Coral variants. These fish inhabit the open waters of The Wilds and can be caught using earthworms.
Devilfish have variants such as Ashen, Seashell, Lava, Forsaken (rare), and Firelight. They are found in The Devil’s Roar, and grubs are required to catch them.
Battlegills include Jade, Sky, Rum, Sand (rare), and Bittersweet variants. They are found near Skeleton Ships and active Skeleton Forts. Grubs are needed to catch these fish.
Wreckers feature variants like Rose, Blackcloud (rare), Snow, Sun, and Moon. They are located near Shipwrecks, with Blackcloud Wreckers specifically found inside Storms. To catch Wreckers, earthworms are required.
Stormfish come in Ancient, Shores, Wild, Shadow (rare), and Twilight variants. They are found in heavy Storms and cannot be caught in The Devil’s Roar. Leeches are necessary to catch Stormfish.
Every fish variant comes in two types, regular and trophy. Trophy fishes are rarer, bigger in size, and harder to reel in, they give more gold and reputation when sold to the hunters call.
How to Fish in Sea of Thieves?
Face the nearest body of water and cast your fishing rod. A nametag should appear before a fish bites your line. Once the fish is hooked, point the rod in the opposite direction of where the fish is swimming. After a while, the fish will tire, which is indicated by the line becoming loose. This is when you should start reeling the fish in. Be careful, if you reel in the fish before it is tired, the line will snap and the fish will escape. Typically, tiring the fish 2-3 times and reeling it is enough to catch it. (Trophy fish are harder to catch and tire more slowly than normal fish)
Best Fishing rod to use in the Sea of Thieves
While fishing rod skins are purely cosmetic, the forsaken ashes fishing rod (Hunter of Devilfish title required to purchase it from the equipment store) is arguably the best fishing rod in game, because it has a glowing line, which makes fishing a lot easier when fishing in low visibility (during night and during storms).

Bait in Sea of Thieves
There are three types of bait in Sea of Thieves: leeches, grubs, and earthworms. All three can be dug up in different locations: leeches are found on the shoreline where the water meets the shore, grubs are found on sandy patches, and earthworms are found on grassy patches. A full bait crate contains 50 of each type, totaling 150 pieces of bait. Different type of bait is required to catch different types of fish.

Splashtails
Splashtails are one of the most common fish species in Sea of Thieves. These playful fish can be found in most open bodies of water across the Sea of Thieves, making them easy to catch. No bait is required to catch splashtails. Just cast away your rod!
Variants
Ruby Splashtail – base variant
Sunny Splashtail – common variant
Indigo Splashtail – Uncommon variant

Best way to catch Splashtails
Sail on the high seas. Although safer seas have no enemy pirates, making them safer, they offer 30% less reputation and have a reputation cap of 40. This will make the already long grind even longer. The higher seas are worth the risk, and with some clever docking of your ship, you can be nearly invisible in high seas.
When you spawn, sail to the nearest sea post. Let your ship drift away while you fish from the sea post directly. Mobs cannot spawn on any seaposts, making fishing completely safe from mobs! No bait is required to catch splashtails. You can sell the fish you catch right there. If you spot an approaching enemy ship, use the Hide emote in some less noticeable corner to make your nametag invisible. The Hide emote is available for free in the Pirate Emporium and will conceal your name from enemy pirates as long as you don’t use chat or voice chat. You can carry up to 5 fish, and they cannot be taken by other players unless you offer them. Even if you die, you will retain them upon respawn. Sell the fish after catching 5 at a time and then resume fishing. This method is the safest for catching splashtails. However, the only drawback is that you cannot cook your fish before selling them because your ship is kept at a distance to avoid attracting pirates. You might consider buying a storage crate to increase efficiency, though it’s not necessary.
If you like a rowboat adventure and wish to RP as a humble fisherman
Buy a storage crate and find a rowboat. Go to the island nearest to the sea post, such as:
- Keel Haul Fort (C-6)
- Twin Groves (H-11)
- Crooks Hollow (M-16)
- Tri-Rock Isle (R-10)
- Black Sand Atoll (O-3)
Stand on the shore and fish to your heart’s content, filling your storage crate as desired. Once you’ve caught enough fish, cook them on one or more of the campfires available on those islands. After cooking, row your rowboat towards the nearest sea post, which should be visible with your spyglass. A demerit is that Rowing from the island to the sea post may take a long time, and mobs can be bothersome .This method makes it much easier to avoid player activity in the area, and there’s a chance you might encounter ancient skeletons while fishing on the island (I’ve had 3 spawn on me just fishing on an island).
If you want to sell cooked fish
Buy a storage crate and sail to the nearest sea fort. Clear the fort and dock your ship so it’s not easily visible to enemy ships. Fish to your heart’s content. After fishing, use the four stoves in the sea fort to cook your fish quickly—this is the fastest cooking method in Sea of Thieves. Once cooking is complete, scan the horizon for enemy ships, then sail to the nearest sea post or outpost to sell your fish.
If you want to sell cooked fish without sailing
Server hop on a captained vessel until you spawn at Port Merrick (formerly New Golden Sands). Let your ship sail away unmanned. Buy a storage crate and fish from the backside of the island. Use the four stoves above the tavern to cook the fish and sell them to the Sovereigns at the outpost. This method requires no sailing, offers very fast cooking, and avoids mobs since none spawn at outposts. Port Merrick is large with many hiding spots, making it easy to stay concealed if enemy ships approach.
As you complete all the commendations for splashtails, be selective about what you catch. To save time avoid reeling in fish variants for which you’ve already finished the commendation.
Pondies
Pondies are the easiest fish to reel in and they require no bait. They are found in freshwater ponds.

Best way to catch Pondies
Buy a storage crate and sail to Mermaid’s Hideaway, located at the northwestern edge of the map. Dock your ship at the back of the island, away from other islands, to easily hide it from view. There is a rock jutting out in the pond’s waters that provides an ideal spot for fishing. Mobs with cutlasses cannot reach you there. Fish as much as you need, selectively reeling in only the fish required to complete your commendations. Cook your fish on your ship’s stove while sailing toward a sea post.
Alternatively, you can fish at The Crow’s Nest Fortress or Hidden Spring Keep, where no hostile mobs will spawn. However, these locations are in regions with higher player activity.
Islehoppers
Islehoppers are a unique species of fish that can be found near specific large islands in Sea of Thieves. They do not require bait to catch. They can spawn only in the region from where the islands title pops out to the island shoreline. Islehoppers are exceptions to fish variants as they are available in only certain locations. The night variant is Amethyst Islehopper and the rare variant is Raven islehopper.
Stone Islehopper: Shipwreck Bay, Shark Bait Cove, Crook’s Hollow, Sailor’s Bounty, Cannon Cove, Fetcher’s Rest
Moss Islehopper: Ashen Reaches, Thieves’ Haven, Marauder’s Arch, Lone Cove, Wanderer’s Refuge, Ruby’s Fall

Best way to catch Islehoppers
Depending on where you spawn upon logging in, buy a storage crate and sail to one of the islands mentioned above. Dock your ship in such a way that it is hidden from other players and fish from your ship to avoid annoying mobs.
To efficiently catch the Raven Islehopper (Rare Variant), fish during the day at an island where the Amethyst Islehopper (Night Variant) spawns. Since night variants of any fish only appear at night, the only fish you can catch there without using bait are Splashtails and the Raven Islehopper. When targeting the Raven Islehopper, focus on reeling in only the Raven Islehopper and avoid catching Splashtails.

Ancientscales
The Ancient Isles in Sea of Thieves is a striking region located in the southwestern part of the map. This area is known for its bright, sunny weather, deep blue waters, and lush vegetation. Ancientscales are a type of fish found in the open waters of The Ancient Isles in Sea of Thieves. They are need leeches as bait, which is necessary to catch them

Best ways to catch Ancientscales

Use the Cursed rogue tall tale to dive and rise at Plunder Outpost (J-18) or Ancient Spire outpost (Q-17), buy a storage crate and a bait crate from the merchant alliance representative from the outpost and set sail to the Finest Trading Post (F-17) or Stephen’s spoils (L-16). Let your ship sail away while you fish from the docks. Sell the fish at the seapost. If you exhaust your leeches, you can buy one more bait crate from the Hunters call representative in the sea post.
Alternatively, On a captained vessel once you spawn on either one of those outpost, buy the bait crate and fish from the outpost. Once you run out of leeches you can always dig for more leeches. Once over fishing simply sell them to the sovereigns at the outpost.
If you’re hoping for an Ancient skeleton to spawn on you while you fish, buy a bait crate, sail to Lost Gold Fort and fish from there. No pesky hostile mobs will spawn on you and The Finest Trading Post is the first island west of Lost Gold Fort
Plentifins
Plentifins, as the name suggests can be found in the Shores of Plenty region (North-Western) of Sea of Thieves. They need earthworms as bait.

Best Way to fish Plentifin
To fish Plentifin efficiently, start by server hopping on a captained vessel until you spawn at Port Merrick. Purchase a Storage Crate and a Bait Crate. Fish from the Northwestern part of Port Merrick, and if you run out of earthworms, dig up more on the island. Once you’re done fishing, cook all your fish on the four stoves above the tavern and then sell your cooked fish to the Sovereigns.
Wildsplashes
Wildsplashes are fish found in the open waters of The Wilds. To catch them, you’ll need to use Earthworms as bait.

Best way to fish Wildsplashes
Once you spawn at Galleon’s Grave or Dagger Tooth Outpost, buy a bait crate and fish from the pier. After fishing, sell your catch to the Sovereigns.
Alternatively, for a longer and more secluded (hidden from other players) fishing experience, buy a bait crate and sail to Three Paces East Seapost (S-10) or The Wild Treasures Store (O-4). Let your ship sail away and fish from the seapost. You can also purchase an additional bait crate from the Hunter’s Call Representative there. Once done fishing, sell your fish to the representative.
Devilfish
Devilfish are found in the open waters of The Devil’s Roar. To catch them, you’ll need to use grubs as bait. Due to the nature of the region, you could spend hours upon hours of bold fishing and not encounter another player.

Best way to catch Devilfish

Spawn on Ancient Spire outpost, or put down Heart of Fire tall tale to dive and rise at Morrow’s peak outpost. buy a bait crate and sail towards Roaring Traders (U-20). Fish as much as you want and sell the fish directly to the Hunter’s call representative there. You can buy one more bait crate if your stock of grubs finish. Be careful of Volcanic explosions when fishing in the Devil’s Roar.

Battlegills
Battlegills are aggressive fish that are found in dangerous waters, specifically near Skeleton Ships, active Skeleton Forts, Forts of Fortune, and the Fort of the Damned. To catch them, you’ll need to use grubs as bait.

Best ways to catch Battlegills
Spawn on any server with the Skeleton Fleet World Event active. Purchase a bait crate, fill your pocket with 10 grubs, and head to the Pirate Legends hideout. Since the hideout is located beneath the area where the Skeleton Fleet spawns, you can fish for Battlegills from this location as long as the fleet event remains active. The only demerit is that you can only keep 5 fish in your pocket and it takes time to run from the legend hideout to the sovereigns after every 5 fish.
Alternatively while a skeleton fleet event is active, you can fish from the North Star Seapost(H-10) and catch battlegills.
For a more fun method, buy a bait crate and a storage crate from the merchant, transfer all grubs to the storage crate and search the horizon for a skeleton galleon. Once you find one, board the galleon and get up to the bow of it. Neither blades nor bullets can reach you there! Have fun fishing as the skeleton crew sails around, trying to kill you in vain.
Wreckers
Wreckers are found near Shipwrecks in the Sea of Thieves and require Earthworms as bait to catch.
Variants
Instead of an uncommon variant, wreckers have a storm variant, which is perhaps the most difficult fish to catch in Sea of Thieves.

Best Way to Catch Wreckers
[Earthworms Required]
Once you spawn on any outpost, buy a bait crate and look for Reaper boxes on your ship’s map table. Reaper boxes are marked on the map and, apart from fort of the damned, only spawn in shipwrecks. If you spot a Reaper box in open seas, there is a shipwreck there. Sail towards the location of the Reaper box. Once you arrive, mark the spot on your map, retrieve the Reaper chest, and bury it on a nearby island to remove the marker visible to other players. Return to the marked location and fish for Wreckers from your ship. If you run out of Earthworms, visit the nearest island to dig up more. Be cautious not to sail too far, as the shipwreck may despawn.
Alternatively, put down a lost shipment voyage, locate the shipwreck and fish wreckers from there. (Easiest way)
Best way to Catch the Blackcloud Wrecker
The Blackcloud Wrecker is not the rare variant but a unique Storm Variant. The Snow Wrecker is the Rare Variant, however it is entirely up to RNG when it spawns.
The Blackcloud Wrecker is perhaps the most annoying and difficult fish to catch, not only do you have to fish in a storm, you also need to fish near a shipwreck in a storm to catch the Blackcloud Wrecker.
So How do you do it?
You can get the black cloud wrecker from barrels in sunken ships if you are lucky, but that is up to the RNG Gods, fortunately, there is a strategy which you can use to catch the Black Cloud Wrecker.

This is a Sea of Thieves Storm Tracker. Storms are synchronized across all servers in sea of thieves. This particular website features the current location and the future path of the storm.
Once done, hop on a server. Look for reaper chests that meets the future storm path somewhere. Buy a bait crate and sail there as quickly as you can and prepare for fishing. Only catch Blackcloud Wreckers to save precious storm time.
If the Storm passes you over and you don’t have enough Blackcloud Wreckers, repeat the following method, server hop till you find reaper chests aligning with future storm path.
Alternatively, While you have the storm tracker open, check the storms path and put down a lost shipment at the appropriate location. Eg: if the storm’s route passes through the ancient isles , pop down a voyage when you’re near the ancient spire outpost. That way you are guaranteed to get a shipwreck to spawn on the future path of the storm, if the lost shipment route does not intercept the storm path, reroll the voyage until you get once that intercepts.

Stormfish
Stormfish are found in the open waters during heavy storms, which are indicated by a spinning compass and ringing ship’s bell. They require leeches as bait.

Unlike other fish, Stormfish variants are not classified by rarity but by region.

Best way to catch Stormfish
Hop onto a server, purchase a bait crate, and then use the Storm Tracker Storm Tracker – Sea of Thieves Interactive Map (rarethief.com) to track the storm’s future route. Dock near an island where the storm will pass through, as the waters near islands are relatively calmer during storms, reducing the risk of damage to your ship. This helps avoid the hassle of bailing and repairing while you fish for Stormfish. Remember, Stormfish only spawn in intense storms, indicated by the ringing of your ship’s bell. If the bell stops ringing, the storm has moved on. Check the website again, relocate to a suitable island, and repeat the process.
Best way to catch Shadow Stormfish
The Glorious Sea Dog Tavern (K-12), where the old Arena used to be, is not located in any specific region. Storms frequently pass through this area, so if you fish there during the day, the only Stormfish you’ll catch is the Shadow Stormfish. This does not increase the odds of catching the Shadow Stormfish, but does not spawn the other type of Stormfish, Fish here after you complete the rest of your stormfish, to avoid them from spawning
Other Commendations
Hunter of the Dawn Caller: Deliver 50 Pieces of Cooked Chicken.

Hop on a server, buy meat from the shipwright, this will give you a few uncooked pieces of meat. Next, go to a small island, like Chicken Isle (I-16), Booty Isle(K-20), Fool’s Lagoon(I-14), Snake Island (K-16). Kill all the required animals there and store their meat in a storage crate. Once there are no animals alive on the island, kill yourself ingame by either using blunderbombs or drowning, once you return from the ferry of the damned, a few animals should have respawned. Repeat this process till you have all the meat you need. Sail towards the nearest sea fort and use the 4 stoves there to cook all your meat. Search the white barrels of the sea fort as they contain a few cooked fish and meat.
Alternatively Server hop till you spawn on Port Merrick, buy a storage crate and Sail to Crescent isle(B-9) or Cannon Cove(G-10). Kill all animals there and put their meat in the storage crate. Drown yourself, return from the ferry and repeat this process till you have all the required meat. Return to Port Merrick and cook the meat on the three stoves above the tavern. Sell all your meat to the Sovereign.
Please note that the Hunters call only accepts cooked meat, they do not buy uncooked meat.

Spawn on a server on a captained vessel, buy a storage crate and sail a little bit away from the outpost, blunderbomb yourself once so that you have half health. And jump down in the sea. Sharks spawn faster when you are not at full health (A.K.A bleeding). Kill the sharks that spawn till you have the required amount of shark meat. Cook it and sell it to the Sovereign at the outpost.
Alternatively during a normal session, always loot shipwrecks and check the white barrels in sea forts, theres a chance they might contain cooked shark meat.
Best way to complete the Hunter of the Great Maw and the Monstrous Beast
Meg and Kraken spawns are entirely up to RNG, you will encounter them as you sail on the open seas. Do not run from them and kill them when they spawn on you. A single Meg drops 4-6 pieces of Meg meat and every destroyed tentacle of a Kraken drops one Kraken meat.
Additionally you can find Meg and Kraken meat in sunken ship barrels.
Miscellaneous Commendations
Hunter of Treacherous Plunder: Deliver 50 pieces of Treacherous Plunder.
Captain of The Killer Whale: Purchase all parts of The Killer Whale Ship.
Hunter of Treacherous Plunder
When fishing without any bait, the player has a chance to get junk items (While they are known as junk items and give almost no gold when sold, they are very rare) Treacherous Plunder contains Old Boot, Old Hat, Old Skull and Fish bones. To fish out treacherous plunder, cast and keep recasting till you hook a treacherous plunder.
Captain of The Killer Whale
Once you reach level 50 in Hunter’s call (Which you should, after all that fishing) you can buy all parts of the The Killer Whale Ship Set. Buy them all to unlock the Captain of The Killer Whale.
You will unlock the following commendations as you progress through the Hunter’s Call.
Hunter of the Sea of Thieves: Earn 15 Grade 5 Hunter’s Call Commendations.
Master Hunter of the Sea of Thieves: Earn 35 Grade 5 Hunter’s Call Commendations.
Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves: Earn 57 Grade 5 Hunter’s Call Commendations.
Extra Tips to Remember
Do all your Wreckers First! As you fish for wreckers, The barrels in the shipwreck respawn every 15 minutes, plunder them periodically. Shipwreck Barrels can contain any of all types of fish, Kraken/Meg and Other types of meat.
Do not have any pets onboard when you fish, those little devils can eat your fish the moment you extend your hand.
Always keep the Rarest Fish you have on your person in the event someone steals your storage crate.
Fish Selectively, don’t bother catching the base and common variant after you deliver 50 of those each.
Extended Fishing can turn boring pretty quickly, consider doing another activity if you find yourself bored.

Nice job matey. Your beginning intro on fish species some show (rare) others don’t. For consistency, it should be the same. You could have also highlighted that some or night time variants at the same time. While fishing is a guaranteed process for catching fish, one can also find fish in rowies, wrecks and floating barrels…….. did you mention the Legendy Chief commedations as.part of a guild?
