I love a good game deal. Who doesn’t? But seriously, I buy basically everything on sale and in doing so have come across some pretty great deals. Here are five games under $10 and ten games under $5 that I recommend taking a look at.
Five Under Ten
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition
“In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
They called it the greatest discovery in human history.
The civilizations of the galaxy call it… MASS EFFECT.”
Explore your way through the galaxy and save the universe in this legendary 3rd person shooter/action RPG trilogy from peak Bioware! Coming with three whole games originally released in the PS3/360 era and remastered in 2021, the trilogy allows you to play through the entirety of the Mass Effect story. Customize your character as you play as an elite human soldier uniting the galaxy against an ancient, long sleeping threat known as The Reapers and assemble a team of humans and aliens making key decisions that affect the fate of the galaxy. Rated 90 on Metacritic, Mass Effect Legendary Edition can currently be found on Steam for 8.99
- Doom Eternal
Blast shoot, and tear demons limb from limb in this brutal first person shooter, the newest entry in the iconic Doom series that ignited the genre. “Doom Eternal doesn’t just set the bar, it breaks it. Many of the best games of the FPS genre do what has already been done, and can do it really, really well, but Doom Eternal does what no other game has done before, crafting a fast-paced power fantasy that sets your brain cells on fire.” Rated 88 on Metacritic, Doom Eternal can be found on Steam via Fanatical for 8.79
- Devil May Cry 5
Stylishly combo your way through hordes of demons in this goreful 3rd person “perfect action game” rated 88 on metacritic. Playing as Dante, Nero, or V, wielding swords, motorcycles, guns, and magic, Devil May Cry allows you deep combat with some of the best combo mechanics this side of Street Fighter. All characters have completely unique movesets and playstyles, providing new challenges as you master all three characters (or four with the DLC) in “arguably the best game in the series to date.” As of time of writing, Devil May Cry 5 with the Vergil DLC can be found on Steam for 9.89
- Control
Levitate, evade, shield, seize and launch your way through this enigmatic mindfuck of a third person shooter set in Remedy’s Alan Wake universe. As Jesse Faden, the Federal Bureau of Control’s new director, you unlock and use the powers of telekinesis, a psychic gun that shifts forms, and more powers and you are tasked with fighting off the hiss, a deadly force corrupting the buildings workers and bending reality itself. Shoot and force throw your way through the eeriest office building you have ever seen as you discover secrets of the organization, what led to the outbreak, as well as uncover the mysteries of your own past. Rated 85 on Metacritic and can be found in its Ultimate Edition on Steam for just 7.99
- Hifi Rush
With a beautiful cel shaded art style that seems like it popped off the pages of a comic book, Hifi Rush combines rhythm and action in a game that shares as many similarities to Devil May Cry as it does to guitar hero. With an iPod embedded in your chest, use timing based combos and parries to beat down enemies and (somewhat) fulfill your dreams of being a rockstar as you take on the evil Vandelay Technologies. Developed by the recently revived Tango Gameworks, Hifi Rush earned an 87 on Metacritic and has a Steam key which can be purchased from various places at a price of around $8
Ten Under 5
1 and 2: Wolfenstein I and II
A revival and remake of the iconic first person shooter, Wolfenstein The New Order and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus feature a grim fictional alternate universe where the Nazis have all but won World War II and are squashing out the last vestiges of resistance. Play as BJ Blazcowicz, perhaps the baddest Nazi killer in video game history as you face off against a technologically upgraded German army and slay more Nazis than you can count. Wolfenstein The New Order has a 79 critic score on Metacritic, and can be found on GoG for 3.99 or Steam via Fanatical for 4.39. The New Colossus boasts an 87 Metascore and can be found on GoG for 5.99 or Steam via Fanatical for 5.39
3 and 4: Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 and 2
Castlevania Lords of Shadow was the first Castlevania game to hit 3d and came out in October 2010, about 7 months after God of War III. Lords of Shadow was clearly inspired by Kratos’s original trilogy of games, with a fixed camera, 2 button attack + extras combo system, and an iron chain weapon that bears a heavy resemblance to Kratos’s signature Blades of Chaos.
Though a departure from classic Castlevania games, with nearly unrecognizable gameplay and a new protagonist, LoS bears the series’ eerie gothic atmosphere and manages to bring together the Castlevania feel with the gameplay of God of War for a wholly enjoyable, if not entirely original hack ‘n’ slash campaign. Lords of Shadow received an 83 Metascore and its Steam version can be found via various resellers for around 3 to $4
Lords of Shadow 2 received a 70 metascore with a 7.7 user score and can be found on Steam via CDKeys for $3.99
5. Splinter Cell Blacklist
Ubisoft’s iconic stealth action third person shooter franchise features perhaps the best stealth of any game/series in the publisher’s lineup. Blacklist is the most recent effort in the franchise and builds on everything that came before it with tight, tense stealth and fast, intense action. NZGamer had this to say about the game: “No doubt about it, this is the definitive Splinter Cell experience. I’d even go as far as to say it’s the best stealth game of this console generation. Sorry, Kojima.” Blacklist has a Metascore of 82 and its Ubisoft connect digital key can be found on driffle for $4.75. For the Steam version, you can pay $7.49 to purchase the game directly on the Steam store.
6. Doom
Doom Eternal already has a place on this and now it’s time for the original reboot. With a fast, frenetic single player campaign, Doom has you running and gunning infernal demons as Doomguy. Who might be a God? Well he definitely has a super suit. And an even super-er shotgun. Doom has an 85 Metascore can be found on Fanatical for $3.49
7. Rayman Legends
A far cry from Doom, Rayman Legends features the long running series’ titular character as he runs, jumps and slaps his way across a bonanza of platforming levels in his mission to free the teensies – small blue guys with big noses. With tight gameplay and controls, beautiful vibrant graphics, and a popping soundtrack, Rayman Legends has earned critical acclaim, achieving a Metascore of 92. The Ubisoft Connect version of the game can be found at Instant Gaming for $3.92, while the Steam version can be found directly on the Steam store for $5.99
8. Dishonored
The plague-ridden city of Dunwall is infested and corrupt in this first person stealth action game. You play as Corvo, a legendary bodyguard who is framed for the murdering of the empress and, after being visited by a mysterious figure, is endowed with supernatural abilities, such as teleportation, possession, and stopping time. Corvo can sneak or fight his way through Dunwall as the game’s path is forged by your choices. Kill too many guards in one level and find chaos waiting for you in the next level, as the guard and alert level is raised. Dishonored has a Metascore of 91 and the Steam version of the game can be found on Fanatical for $2.19.
9. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Ever wanted to play Skyrim but in a realistic setting, with no supernatural powers or fantasy elements? Then Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the game for you. Set in 15th century Bohemia in the times of King Wenceslaus IV, your village is brutally raided and your family murdered and you embark on a quest for justice for your family and to restore the rightful king.
Kingdom Deliverance has a 76 Metascore and an 8.1 user score on Metacritic, and can be purchased on the Epic store for 2.99, or on Steam via CDKeys for 2.69. The highly anticipated sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, arrives on the 11th of February, 2025.
10. Bioshock
Regularly recognized as a paradigm of atmospheric immersive sims, this first-person shooter places you in the shoes of Jack Wynand, the sole survivor of an airplane crash. Finding a lighthouse that provides you entry to the underwater city of Rapture, you soon discover plasmids – gene-altering substances that endow you with superpowers, such as fire . Armed with plasmids and a number of weapons, you explore and fight your way through the dystopian city, making moral choices along the way as you meet and discover the previous inhabitants of rapture. Bioshock’s iconic Big Daddy’s shock fear into your heart as you immerse yourself in the rich world and narrative. Bioshock has a Metascore of 96 and can be found on Steam via various resellers for under $4.
